Why Taylor Swift is opposing a 'Swift Home' bedding brand
A comforter brand may be in for a sleepless night.
Taylor Swift is asking the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to stop a bedding company from registering a federal trademark for “Swift Home," arguing the name and styling could send shoppers drifting toward a false assumption: that the products are connected to her.
Swift's company, TAS Rights Management LLC, filed an opposition against Cathay Home Inc., a Manhattan-based home goods company that applied on May 5, 2025, to register "Swift Home" for items including decorative pillows, pillows, mattresses, mattress toppers, bed sheets, comforters, duvets, pillowcases, quilts and sheet sets.
The "Swift Home" mark features a cursive "Swift" with four lines coming out of the "t" like wings. Swift's team argues the swoosh of the "S" and the flowing script resembles Swift's trademarked signature, first filed in 2009, and could confuse consumers into believing Cathay's products are sponsored by or associated with the pop superstar.

The case is now formally underway at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. A "Notice of Institution" dated Feb. 11 warns that Cathay "must file answer" within 60 days, setting a deadline of April 12. It also lays out a full schedule, including trial and briefing windows stretching into 2027, with an optional request for an oral hearing due Sept. 14, 2027.
Swift is no stranger to intellectual property matters. The Eras Tour ringleader has built an expansive intellectual property portfolio with 175 live trademarks. Still, trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who first reported the opposition and is not involved in the dispute, noted that she has brought relatively few formal challenges compared with other celebrities. He suggested that the visual similarity between the "Swift Home" script and her well-known signature likely prompted this particular action.
"Normally, somebody that has as much invested in IP as Taylor does, we would see more activity at the Trademark Office," Gerben told Reuters. "There just hasn’t been this really strong enforcement or policing effort around 'Swift.'"
