Sisters thought to have been picked up by man they met on Roblox found

Two young sisters who investigators believe were picked up Jan. 31 by a man they’d communicated with online via the gaming app Roblox and Snapchat were described as “very sheltered” and had few friends, according to records and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

The sisters, ages 12 and 15, ultimately were found about 1 a.m. Feb. 1 in Georgia after being stopped by authorities with Hser Mu Lah Say, 19, who Sheriff John Budensiek has said drove from Nebraska to Indiantown to pick them up.

"This was a sobering case for us here at the Martin County Sheriff's Office, but we're thankful with how it ended,” Budensiek said in a briefing Feb. 2.

According to a missing persons report, sheriff’s officials about 8:10 p.m. on Jan. 31 spoke to the sisters’ adoptive mother, who said they usually go for walks in the neighborhood but return shortly. The adoptive mother said they left the home about 5 p.m. and had not returned.

Other family members reported the sisters “were very sheltered and do not have many friends in the area,” the report states.

The adoptive mother said she’d lectured the girls about not helping with chores, but said when they went for their walk all seemed normal.

Investigators asked the sisters’ biological mother about friends, and she provided the name “Jin.” The biological mother said she knew the 15-year-old girl had messaged him through Instagram.

Investigators asked the adoptive mother about Jin, and she said “he is the one she did not trust.”

The adoptive mother said the 15-year-old girl and Jin hadn’t met in person, and started communicating online via Roblox or Snapchat. She said the 15-year-old girl indicated Jin was from Minnesota, and had sent both sisters food to the home.

On an iPad the 15-year-old girl used, investigators found a message thread in which there was mention of using Snapchat, which investigators found to have been deleted.

An investigator downloaded Snapchat and it automatically logged in to the 15-year-old’s account.

A Snapchat account named “Jin Say” contained a message thread reflecting Jin and the 15-year-old arranged to meet and “were apparently in some sort of dating relationship.”

“Jin had stated in a message he was going to be driving all night,” a report states.

He also sent a video of a taco truck in the area, indicating he was in Indiantown, and another video which appeared to be from a gas station in Indiantown.

Budensiek on Feb. 2 said Say is believed to have picked up the sisters about 6:45 p.m. Jan. 31.

He said investigators believe that on Jan. 30 at 9 a.m., Say left Omaha, Nebraska, and drove straight through to Indiantown, arriving Jan. 31 about 10 a.m.

Budensiek said a variety of agencies, including the FBI and Florida Highway Patrol, played roles in the case. An FBI official was at the media briefing but did not speak.

Ultimately, Budensiek said, authorities in Georgia pulled over the vehicle with the sisters about 1 a.m. Feb. 1.

“I think we prevented something disastrous. Do I know what was going to happen? No, none of us do,” Budensiek said. “We have gone through the devices that we had available to us at the time. We've not seen anything explicit necessarily, but we know our suspect was repeatedly warning these young girls that he could get in a lot of trouble for what he was fixing to do.”

Budensiek said he thought Say would be extradited by the end of the week. He is expected to face charges including two counts each kidnapping and interference of child custody, Budensiek said.

Asked whether Say was cooperating, Budensiek, with photos of Say on a nearby screen, said Say was passive and didn’t give any statements.

“You can kind of see him smirking in that photo,” Budensiek said. “I think he thinks this is a joke, but he's fixing to find out it's not.”
