Lucy Hale is the newest Global UN Goodwill Ambassador for the World Food Programme (WFP)

As Global Ambassador, Hale will be traveling with the organization and amplifying their efforts on her platform

“My dad is a farmer, and my mom is a nurse, so I feel really passionate about supporting women and children,” she tells PEOPLE

Lucy Hale’s dream of finding a greater purpose is coming to fruition.

The 36-year-old actress has been named the newest Global UN Goodwill Ambassador for the World Food Programme (WFP), and says the opportunity is arriving at the perfect moment in her life.

“I’ve been an actress for going on two decades, and I love what I do, but I’ve always had a dream of helping in a bigger way,” Hale tells PEOPLE. “WFP is the largest hunger relief program in the world, so it’s an honor to get to use my voice and platform to help others and encourage other people to do the same.”

Hale, who began working with the humanitarian organization in 2024, has a personal connection to its mission. “My dad is a farmer, and my mom is a nurse, so I feel really passionate about supporting women and children,” she explains. “If countries and nations are starving, they can’t thrive. WFP not only gives food to people in need, but they also teach the locals how to farm their own food.”

As a global ambassador, the Pretty Little Liars star is eager to take on a more hands-on role. “I am going to go on trips and see firsthand the work that WFP does,” she says. “But a lot of my work will be amplifying their efforts and advocating for the things that they’re doing. I know how important my platform is and that even the smallest things can make a difference— getting the word out about what WFP has been doing for over 60 years.”

“It’s the honor of a lifetime,” she adds. “I hope this becomes a long and lasting partnership.”

Hale believes the impact of her role can extend far beyond her own platform. “Someone can look at what I post, and they can get inspired, and the ripple effect of it is just really beautiful,” she says. “It feels great to be part of something that’s truly making a difference.”

The opportunity fulfills a long-held goal. “I feel emotional about this because I’ve always wanted to do more,” Hale says. “I’m 36 now, and the last couple of years I’ve just felt called to something bigger than myself, and I never really knew what that was. I just knew the universe would provide the path to go down, and it’s such an honor to be put into this position.”

Outside of her work with WFP, Hale finds fulfillment in quieter ways. “I find happiness in my spirituality—not in a ‘woo-woo’ way, but in being present, finding new ways to take care of myself and honoring the beautiful relationships in my life,” Hale explains.

“Beyond my career and this amazing partnership, my life is pretty simple, quiet and private,” she adds. “I’m very open about many things in my life, a lot of things I’ve been through, but the other side of my life feels very protected and pure. I like it that way.”
