At 6 p.m. sharp on Monday, April 20, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci arrived at Lincoln Center for the world premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2. They hopped out of their black cars, climbed a stage, and posed between two gigantic red heels, hugging one another and laughing.

For a moment, the rowdy crowd—members of the public who gathered outside the concert hall hoping for a glimpse of the stars, and premiere invitees who were inside watching arrivals on a screen—stood silently still in awe.

“Wow, they all brought it,” said Kenneth Branagh, the North Irish actor who plays Miranda Priestley’s husband in the sequel, who was walking the red carpet at the time (Indeed, their looks were striking. Streep was in a red cape designed by Sarah Burton; Hathaway in a strapless red silk gown by Louis Vuitton; and Blunt in a Schiaparelli tulle skirt.)

Simone Ashley, of Bridgerton fame, who plays Miranda Priestly’s assistant, paused an interview she was giving to stare up at the TV. She nodded and gave a huge grin. This reunion, after all, has been a long time coming.

It has been almost exactly 20 years since the original The Devil Wears Prada opened in theaters, days before the Met Gala in 2006. Since then, there has been speculation about whether a sequel would come. Even after that was confirmed in July 2024, there was seemingly endless chatter about what the plot would be, who would be in it, and what they would all wear. Once filming started on the streets of New York City under the nickname Cerulean, fans looked for any clue they could find.

Hype reached an all-time high in April when Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour appeared on the cover of Vogue’s May issue, and the final trailer featured an original song by Lady Gaga and Doechi named “Runway.” The message: The Devil Wears Prada 2 was going all out.

Guests fortunate enough to snag a premiere ticket started arriving at David Geffen Hall around 4 pm on Monday. Bartenders for Grey Goose, the vodka sponsor, were handing out custom cocktails, including The Devil’s Roast (an espresso martini with three gold espresso beans) and the Groundbreaking Spring Spritz (“A spritz for spring?” read the menu. “Groundbreaking.”) Google had a fashion suite where guests could peruse original outfits from the first film (like a black Galliano gown worn by main character Andy Sachs) and virtually try them on.

The crowd was full of familiar faces who dressed to impress. Evan Hirsch, the content creator known for upcycling dresses, wore a floor-length blue cape with Miranda Priestly’s “cerulean monologue” from the first film printed out in full. Coco Rocha showed off a white fur ballgown with large black spots. Heidi Klum wore a turquoise dress with airy, open sides. Justin Theroux, who plays Blunt’s boyfriend in the movie, and his wife Nicole Brydon Bloom posed proudly for photos, days after announcing the birth of their new son.

While the cocktail party raged, stars walked the red carpet in a tent across the plaza that went around Lincoln Center’s famous fountain (While posing for photographers, Meryl Streep made a gesture that seemed to say, "Should I jump in?”) There the atmosphere felt more like a cocktail party, with songs like Chappell Roan’s “Hot to Go!” blaring on loudspeakers.

Wintour, Blunt, Hathaway, and Streep stood in a tight circle, laughing about something Blunt said. (They were so deep in conversation, their handlers had to pull them away to do interviews.) Martin Short kept a watchful arm on Streep’s back and talked to the people who came up to his partner, including television presenter Gayle King. “I’ve seen the movie three times,” he said proudly. “The best part is the ending.” (I won’t spoil it, but he was correct.)

At 6:50 p.m., a bell rang, signaling it was time to head into the theater. Round containers of popcorn and bottles of water were handed out as guests took their seats in the hall, which fits over 2,000 people. The lights dimmed, and director David Frankel gave a short speech. “I just want to welcome you to the friends and family screening of our little indie movie,” he said, laughing.

“For 18 years, we never imagined a sequel would be possible,” he continued. “This reunion with our movie family has been nothing short of joyful.”

He welcomed the principal actors onto the stage, who gave big waves to the audience, before bringing Lady Gaga out as a surprise (She performs in the film. Other fun cameos include musician Jon Batiste, basketball player Carmelo Anthony, and journalists Tina Brown and Kara Swisher, most of whom were at the premiere.)

When the screening was over, the audience broke into a round of applause before heading into the foyer for a feast of steak, chicken Parmesan, roasted beets, and quinoa salad, served buffet-style. Mini bottles of Moët were passed around on silver trays, and bartenders poured more signature cocktails.

On the way out, guests got copies of Runway Magazine. Inside was an editor's letter from Miranda Priestly (“Spring reminds us that reinvention need not be dramatic or declarative to be transformative”) and guides to Lake Como and Milan, where scenes from the sequel take place.

One man flipping through the magazine laughed when he came upon one of the feature articles that declared “Black is the new cerulean.”
