Ali Larter stars alongside Billy Bob Thornton in the Paramount+ hit series Landman
The show was co-created by Taylor Sheridan, and Larter tells PEOPLE about how present Sheridan, 55, was on set when season 2 was being filmed
She previously told PEOPLE that Sheridan, who created the hit series, is a "provocateur"
There's no question that Taylor Sheridan is the mastermind behind Landman, but fans might be surprised by how often the mind behind many of TV's biggest hits of the last decade is actually on set.
The Billy Bob Thornton-led series about oil in Texas wrapped up its second season on Sunday, Jan. 18, and Ali Larter tells PEOPLE that Sheridan, 55, tends to take a backseat when production is underway.
"Taylor was only on set three times this year," she reveals. "He was there for the white truffle scene [in the premiere], because he's going to make sure that things are going the way he wants."
Otherwise, she says, "He kind of just let the train barrel ahead."
Larter gives kudos to director Stephen Kay, who was at the helm of all 10 episodes this season. "He is such a gift to the show. He's so immensely talented," she says.

With Landman, Sheridan "puts a mirror up" to society, Larter continues, as she says the series really came into its own in season 2.
"I will say, with season 2, people understood what the show is," Larter says. "Our show has all these tones in it. Don't be surprised — we're going to take you on a roller coaster, and you're going to go from high action, to a dramatic scene, to a vulnerable love story, romantic moment to high comedy, humor."
Season 2 also allowed Larter to continue showing fans who the firecracker housewife Angela really is.
"I'm always trying to find ways in every scene for you to understand Angela, and that she's got the best intentions. Even though she can be up to no good all the time, the heart runs deep in her," she shares.

Sam Elliott joining the cast as T.L., Tommy's (Thornton) dad, helped fans see both Angela and Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) in a new light, too.
"When Angela and Ainsley come home, he's just sitting at the counter. He's just there, and he watches them," Larter says of one of her favorite scenes of T.L. in season 2. "It's like Taylor's showing the audience how to think about Angela and Ainsley through T.L.'s eyes."
"The way that he sees us is so amazing because a lot of times, people even within the show are coming after her, commenting about me, or whatever. It's just always interesting when another character in the show sees us in a different way," she continues.
